Atlantic Beach covers an area of less than 1 square
mile and has fewer than 2 thousand permanent residents. It has been dredged out
of the Reynolds Channel and is a delightful getaway in the sand with plenty of
sun and surf as well. This largely man-made beach came in to existence in the
1920s due to private enterprise. Plans to develop it in to a major resort had
to wait until well after World War II but now it is looked upon as a common
choice for those wishing to establish a second vacation home and even
for the first time buyer.
Getting
to the beach is part of the attraction. The present Atlantic Beach Bridge was built between 1950 and 1952. It
replaced the original one with better clearance for ships and twice the lanes
and traffic capacity. It is a spectacular construction, especially when the
draw span is open. It is one of the incidental sights for people on a visit to
the town.
Realtors
can help you find a dream
home in Atlantic Beach. You can choose between modern
constructions, with every contemporary amenity or settle for a home with Old
World Colonial charm. Spectacular views of the Reynolds Channel from which the beach
has been dredged, are major attractions of properties on the waterfront.
Vacation homes are in special demand.
The
relatively small area of the town is packed with no less than 9 restaurants
offering a wide selection of dinning options. The range of places varies
between casual settings that suits families with children and a more intimate
atmosphere for a special occasion.
The Tennis Center has 13 outdoor courts. The Clubhouse
has a shop and a snack bar. The Center is pleasantly close to the Ocean and has
excellent coaching facilities. Atlantis Personal Training can help tourists and
residents stay fit. The service provides specialist advice as well. The
Atlantic Station Cinema caters to movie buffs who like to see a film while on a
beach holiday. It also caters to permanent residents who crave for the latest
box office hits.
Sports
fishing opportunities of the pelagic type are possible at the Atlantic Beach
Reef Site. This structure is about 3 miles south of the beach in the Atlantic. It has an area of about 400 acres
and is just over 50 feet deep. It has been made from tires, auto parts and
slabs of concrete. It yields a good harvest of marine life and has a peaceful
atmosphere as well. New York State's Department of Environmental
Conservation maintains this artificial reef. Surf casting yields a good catch
of striped bass even in the off shore shallows. Surfing is inviting and can be
quite a challenge as well in the waters off the main beach. There are also a
host of water sports on offer as well.
