Babylon village is a fine example of the
evolution of modern American Society. It has come a long way from its first
days as a place where stage coaches would stop to rest, to an elegant suburb
today where successful Manhattan professionals can escape and hide
from their rather ugly urban sides. Babylon village turned to agriculture as
stage coaches gave way to more modern transportation not dependant on animals.
The beautiful scenery transformed the place to scores of holiday homes, as the
fruits of the industrial revolution enriched the country's economy. The area is
poised today to remain in the vanguard as its erudite residents jostle for key
positions in the digital age.
The
original name of the place was Huntington South. The name Babylon was first coined by the matriarch of
one of the earliest settlers in the early 19th century, to voice her
displeasure at the raucous and perhaps bawdy goings-on in the vicinity of the
new mansion her family built. How pleased her spirit must be today at the order
and quiet in her old neighborhood!
Babylon has always been at the forefront of
sustainable development. Fishing, leather processing and milling of agricultural
produce dug deep foundations for her prosperity that continues to blossom to
this day. Wealthy New Yorkers soon came to rest in the green countryside and by
the deep blue Ocean and steadily added value to large chunks of real estate in which they wisely
invested.
There
must be something special in the air, soil and water of Babylon village to spur continuous
enterprise and innovation amongst its illustrious sons. It spawned the one
nation's first professional baseball team and was home to the precursor of
wireless radio broadcast. The people who live here display unusual dynamism and
pioneering spirit. The community is well developed and the environment
conserved with due care.
Babylon village now has a population of just
over 12 thousand and an average income about twice the national average of $ 40
thousand a year. Most people are of European origin but there is a healthy and
growing influx of ethnicity. Babylon is now amongst New York 's best rated suburbs with modern
amenities and dynamic community development organizations. Real Estate, Information Technology and
Fishing Charters are some important types of commerce in this largely
residential haven.
The Belmont Lake State Park is an important landmark, serving
sports and recreation needs of not just local people but those confined during
the week to the more congested parts of the entire State. Fast and convenient
rail and bus links bring people from distant places for quality holiday time
with family and close friends.
The Fire
Island Lighthouse is another local attraction. You can have a panoramic view of
both the Ocean and Manhattan from the top and even see the Empire State Building on a clear day. The surrounding
countryside is a naturalist's delight with many birds, fox and deer. The Surfing Museum is worth a visit as well, with
models of boards from the first prototypes to the most aerodynamic and modern
ones.
