My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
Copiague

Copiague is rather densely populated by Long Island standards, with almost 22 thousand people living in just over 3 square miles. The name means 'shelter' in the language of the tribe that once lived here. They must have foreseen that their land would continue to be home to discerning people in the distant future! It was later sold to settlers for just some small arms and warm clothes and the place has never looked back ever since.

Tanner Park is the best known attraction of this home to a community that has fair representation from a number of ethnic groups. Tanner Park has an extensive Marina and a delightful beach as well. A cluster of small sea-going vessels gives Copiague a resort-like touch. Tanner Park also has a number of cultural and sports activities with special privileges for the elderly.

The local community is well knit and active in participating in the development of the neighborhood. It arranges group functions at regular intervals and instills a commendable sense of pride and belonging amongst residents. Education is high on the agenda with a focus on the School district and public awareness. Noted citizens are honored and remembered and includes Marconi, the inventor of the telegraph. George Washington is amongst distinguished Americans to have visited Copiague, though it was for just a meal in his case.

Copiague's influence can be surprising to those who are not aware of the high proportion of early and prominent settlers. Parts of the village were once made to look like Venice with gondolas and canals and streets continue to have common names.

Copiague's Public Library is an important feature of the town, not just for its impressive building and its collection of almost 150 thousand books, magazines and related materials, but for how its story of growth and development through the active participation of simple folk. This library started in 1960 with not even a single book to its name. It has built a collection steadily over the decades and shifted from site to site as its stature and inventory grew. All this has been realized through humble and small contributions by ordinary folk and not because of some huge endowment from a single or a small and elite group.

The Copiague Chamber of Commerce has a host of services including help for new enterprises and valuable database resources of local requirements. Other Associations of professionals such as Teachers and various other professions, all work in harmony for the common good of society, whilst safeguarding specific interests of their constituents.

Copiague is not just a pleasant suburb in which one can reside or visit for a relaxing change from the New York pace, but a place for all people to visit and study how the quality of life for ordinary citizens can be enhanced through empowered group action.
