My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
Cutchogue

Cutchogue is an exception in that it has preserved symbols and artifacts of its past with great diligence, though it pursues modern goals with vigor and translates dreams for the future with concrete action plans. It is unusual to find any signs of past dwellings on Long Island. This is why the Cutchogue remnants of a Fort of its original inhabitants are invaluable.

The Cutchogue Chamber of Commerce has done a commendable job in preparing detailed accounts of the history, attractions and establishments of their town. The Chamber is also active in arranging enjoyable walkabout, tours and related outdoor activities that promote a sense of togetherness and belonging amongst members. This organization covers Suffolk as well.

Cutchogue shares its Free Library with New Suffolk and has an excellent collection. It adds to this with new selections at frequent intervals. Videos and audio materials add variety and interest to traditional print material. A lively newsletter is a highlight of the Library's up-to-date Internet presence.

The presence of a relatively large number of realtors in town including ParkTerrace.com is a clear indication of the attraction that Cutchogue has as a place to live and of the balanced development of real estate to provide a good quality of life for residents. The firm of Brown Harris Stevens has the rare distinction of serving the community and investors ever since 1878. Hahn Realty has a major interest in this firm.

Settlers used Long Island primarily for Agriculture and for fodder after buying up the place from its previous inhabitants. Cutchogue has always enjoyed some of the most fertile soil in the State and was a traditional potato growing belt. It is heartwarming to find stalls along the highway that continue to offer passers-by fresh vegetables. This simple act joins contemporary society with our ancestors of up to 3 centuries back in time. Cutchogue has also done a service for all of us through a recent branch in to the establishment of vineyards that will put fine wines on our tables for years to come.

Cutchogue is truly a historian's delight. The Old House in the Village Green is a National Landmark. The Wickham Farmhouse, the Carriage House and the Schoolhouse Museum are other attractions in the town. Many of the top restaurants are sited in historic old buildings. Seafood is a particular specialty of the town's dining and there is some excellent ice-cream and confectionary for those with sweet teeth!

Landscape Engineers, Marine Suppliers, a 9 hole Golf Course and a Modern Pelagic Fishing Charter are some of the 21st century touches that serve as examples of Cutchogue not to rest on its past laurels, but rather to make determined and valiant steps to remain at the vanguard of Long Island, New York and United States future development.
