My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
East Islip

There could be a special ingredient in the air or the water of East Islip that brings out something special in its inhabitants! The most mundane service carries a special touch. People go about their work with an apparent passion and there is free creativity in the air. The casual visitor will be struck about the unique nature of East Islip, though a rational explanation for its uniqueness is not overt.

The East Islip Historical Society has adopted a novel approach to collating and preserving the traditions of the town. They not only collect photographs, documents and anecdotes of the past and try and conserve old structures, but bring history alive and to the forefront of people's minds through lectures and presentations. They have found a community-development way of not just honoring history, but of carrying the important values and the best traditions forward.

The East Islip Chamber of Commerce leaves no stone unturned to help its members. The practice of exchanging flyers and brochures on each other's enterprises is both useful and most supportive. The Student Participation Day and Street Lighting initiatives are well thought out and worthy of emulation by other towns.

The East Islip Public Library has all the facilities and features of its peers. However monthly gardening tips from the expert authority of New York's Botanical Gardens and an extensive collection of material in large print are but just two but telling examples of how incremental value is built in to everything with East Islip's gentle touch.

Local branches of large chains go the extra mile to provide exceptional service in East Islip. The Astoria Federal Savings Bank is open until 7 in the evening on Fridays, in a typical sign of how customer interests are given pride of place in a veritable spirit of service.

What can be special about a Soccer Club? Sportsmanship and fair play score over goals and wins in East Islip, girls and boys play together at all ages, the intramural has precedence over travel teams and outsiders cannot join at the cost of local youth. So just think, can even your best loved professional team beat all that?

The local Fire Department has 2 centuries to its credit with over a 100 active members in its squad and more than 100 years of 24*7 service every day of every year. Its spirit of professional service has not weakened a jot though the Grumman Aerospace Factory now makes just software for all of Long Island.

One may go on at length in this vein at the cost of repetition, but the thought that East Islip offers special suburban value bears underwriting in the mind. The town has the usual features of realtors, shopping and entertainment, but their mundane description may only serve to distract attention from a celebration of East Islip's unique nature.
