East Moriches

East Moriches offers outdoor lovers a rich and varied experience of adventure and fun. Home to approximately five thousand people, this town of 5 square miles in Suffolk County is smaller and less well known than Center Moriches, but offers some unique sporting facilities and a safe, secluded beach.

Moriches Bay offers a lot of fishing throughout the year. Both fluke and flounder are caught in plenty here and the place has earned Moriches Bay the title "Flat fisherman's Paradise" Lucky anglers may catch striped bass, bluefish, weakfish and blue claw crab. The area is popular for boating as well as many other recreational options. One can safely try a hand at sailing, kayaking and hydro biking in the coves. Relax on the beaches with a picnic or collecting clams. Sailing is popular on the bay throughout summer as there is always a gentle sea breeze. Explore the numerous creeks and coves in a kayak and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the salt marshes.

The truly adventurous can have a go at skydiving at the Long Island Skydiving Center, which is one of the best training centers in the country. A hard day’s fun entitles you to a fine meal. Try the local Atlantic on the Bay seafood restaurant for perfectly cooked fresh catch. American cooking at its best will satisfy you at the White Truffle Inn. Vacation rentals are available and a local B&B, the 1720 Guest House is popular with regular visitors.

Moriches has a couple of centers that go back to the town’s early days. Even in the old days, Moriches was, in reality, just dot on the map compared to the much larger Center Moriches, but it was the closest town of convenience for local estate owners until the mid 1920's. Moriches provided a Post Office, general store, a school that was also the social center.

Today, East Moriches Schools provides children with a well-structured and caring learning environment consistent with the community's goal of high quality, creative and challenging instruction. The Middle School program meets NYS standards and provides students an environment to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Academic enrichment is available in Math and Science, while support and intervention is available to all students experiencing academic difficulty.
