The East Rockaway School District has an engaging commitment to
scholastic excellence. Respect for diversity and for individual needs is a
hallmark of the town's arrangements for education. The Centre Avenue Elementary School has 350 students. The Rhame Avenue School emphasizes parent involvement. The
High School has excellent extra-curricular programs to add value to the
learning process. East Rockaway families have an advantage over many other
towns on Long
Island
because of the quality of the schools and the facility of all grades from kindergarten
to 12 being available within town limits.
The East
Rockaway Public Library's sprawling and elegant premises, its vast collection
and up to date computer and Internet facilities belie its humble beginnings.
East Rockaway's library habit was born around the start of the 20th century
with a handful of people exchanging books on an informal basis. Its rapid
growth is primarily due to a strong reading habit and a tradition of learning
within the town's residents. The Library is distinguished by a unique database
on antiques apart from all the other assets and resources of such a public
facility.
The Bay Park offers fishing, ice skating and
skiing apart from golf, tennis, athletics and court games. Hewlett Point Park is the other place for outdoor recreation
in East Rockaway and has tables and areas for picnics. Volleyball and table
games are also available at this Park. Bay Park and Hewlett Point Park combine to add great value and
pleasure to the East Rockaway quality of life.
There are
a wide variety of cuisine figures in the town's dining choices and there are
places with ocean views as well. Franchises such as Wendy's and pizza places
are available for those inclined towards such food and there is also a cocktail
lounge to make a great start for a formal Italian meal. Dining and
entertainment in East Rockaway is a real pleasure.
East
Rockaway had its heyday prior to the arrival of the Rail Road. The town's 18th century revenue
model was to mill farm produce add shell fish and carry it over sea for trade
with New York. Sloops would return to the area that now forms East
Rockaway with supplies that local farmers needed. One of the Grist Mills is a
local historical attraction even now. However rail was able to outbid water
transport and East Rockaway suffered as a result. The town has slowly but
steadily recovered from this setback over the past decades and is now a well
developed and modern suburb with plenty of prime
real estate locations. Large and luxurious multi-level homes and ranches
are offered by realtors at between $ 600 thousand to over a million. Apartments
are also available at affordable rentals. East Rockaway almost inevitably
figures in the short list of every family with prospects of a live in Nassau and Long Island.
