My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
Elmont

Elmont stands out in Nassau for its association with horse racing. Though it is a typical Long Island suburb in many respects, this is always mentioned when people familiar with the town are asked about Elmont.

Elmont is a famous residential suburb in Nassau with over 32 thousand residents. The town is just over 3 square miles in area.

Education is a special challenge in Elmont given the varied backgrounds of resident families. The Elmont Union Free School District has 6 Elementary Schools. It strives to exceed minimum State standards and caters to children from various cultures, including those who have moved to the United States of late from other countries. The authorities encourage frequent and in-depth interaction between faculty and parents.

The Elmont Public Library offers comprehensive facilities to town residents. Its databases on American culture and Genealogy and Science are special and very useful references for research scholars. It is a valuable adjunct to the town's resources and has the potential to make meaningful inroads in to the unemployment issue.

The Belmont Park that is spread over more than 400 acres is a nationally known landmark of Elmont. It is home to the Belmont Stakes, one of the oldest sporting events in the United States. This annual race attracts race enthusiasts and horse lovers alike and in hordes. Tickets are sold out way in advance and many people associate Elmont with this single event. The New York Racing Association has a base in Elmont. The racing season extends through all of summer and therefore has extended impact on the town.

The relatively large Elmont population is subject to the vagaries and risks of city life. The Long Island Counseling Center runs a Chemical Dependency Program in Elmont. It provides valuable Mental Health and Substance Abuse related services that help residents in distress. This service helps children and other dependents of addicts apart from patients themselves. It goes a long way in terms of concrete measures to manage a potential threat to normal family life and social fabric.

There are plenty of dining choices in town with both fine diners and places serving traditional food such as sizzlers. There are a few bars as well where people can relax after work. Ranch and Cape Cod style homes as well as properties from agents like Park Terrace dominate the real estate market in Elmont. Though some homes are spacious and adequate for more than one family, the median home value is in the relatively modest $ 150 thousand range.
