Farmingdale

That was the incredible deal Englishman Thomas Powell struck with the gullible Marsapeque in 1695. Agriculture led to milling, a pub and then stores for various kinds of provisions. Timber, a brick kiln and processed farm produce enterprises were added as the city of Farmingdale began to take shape in the middle of the 19th century. A technical college was established around the beginning of the 20th century and an aircraft factory and manufactures of various supplies needed for World Wars I and II, gobbled up the agricultural and vacant land for industries and residences for the influx of workers. Modern Farmingdale was born!

Farmingdale is a complete urban agglomeration in its own right. Business, commerce and community life thrive in viable proportions, and people who choose to base themselves within the city limits, would scarcely have occasion to venture afar for maintenance of the routine and essentials of their lives; commuting is not such a chore though, with easy and quick surface connections to the mainland.

Baseball, football, swimming and soccer, Farmingdale caters to sports needs of everyone from children to professionals. Over The Hill Gang is a typical example of how seriously league events are taken and the wonderful opportunity that every family has to raise children in an eclectic and encouraging environment. Peer groups are active and generous in forming healthy and productive habits, with many avenues for vulnerable groups such as girls. The Lady Roughriders is a team that can serve as a worthy model for communities anywhere.

The American Airpower Museum should figure on the top of the list of any person on a quick visit, for it is so inextricably linked with the history of Farmingdale. The Republic Aviation Company was based in Farmingdale and one of their hangars is used for the museum. Vintage aircraft used in the World Wars, aids used before the advent of pressurized cabins and maps for navigation before the age of satellites and electronics, are some of the rare exhibits on display. This museum is unique amongst the many stellar attractions of Long Island and for the eastern U.S. seaboard as well for that matter!

The Adventure Land Amusement Park is a must for small children. Exciting rides, games of skills and delicious treats give kids the time of their lives and the site has all infrastructures to set up a memorable birthday party as well. The Public Library with its futuristic building is another attraction for young people with a host of exciting programs and Internet facilities. Adults can spend quality time here, browsing and reading on matters of interest. Multiplex Cinemas add to the variety of Farmingdale's entertainment choices and can satisfy the most demanding movie buff.

The Farmingdale excitement continues after the sun has set. Run to the Crazy Donkey Bar and Grill lest you miss on some of the fun of the evening. Work on your food literacy at the Bella Napoli or the Golden China, or better still, go to both over the course of a couple of evenings and become an expert on Italy and China! Do not despair if you are not the gourmet type for the Library Café is always ready with a soup, salad and sandwich routine.
