My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
Garden City

The links between education, earning capacity and quality of life are demonstrated in striking manner by Garden City. It seems to have struck a path to prosperity and well being that stands apart from its peers in Nassau. Many villages on Long Island have used their natural topography to best effect. Garden City, as its name suggests, is not lacking in celebrating nature, but it also excels in educating not just children, but willing adults as well. It is one of the few towns where adults can pursue college courses and qualify for degrees, relatively late in life.

Garden City has almost 22 thousand residents spread over an area of about 5 square miles. The demographics are impressive and worthy of emulation by other parts of Nassau.

Garden City has comprehensive Schooling. Elementary, Middle and High Schools offer quality instruction from Grades 1 through to 12. This is a distinct advantage for families that choose Garden City for residence. A full schedule of athletics and sports throughout the year add value to the scholastic value for children that the School District provides. Interaction between faculty and parents is active and integral to every child's learning process.

The Adelphi University has a campus in Garden City. Adult education embellishes undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies and the School of Social Work are two of the most notable arms of this eminent institution of higher learning and continuing education. The campus is a delight with beaches, parks and even New York City all nearby.

The Nassau Community College is also in Garden City and has the appropriate address of One Education Drive. Its vigorous participation in community matters and Distance Learning Programs are amongst the features that help the College make a mark.

The Garden City Public Library is known for its Blood Collection Drives, continuous sales of books and multi-media material at bargain prices and exhibitions that arouse much interest. The small band of intrepid women who formed this Library in the early 1950s would be proud of the majestic institution of such utility that has flowered from their hard labor.

The very nature of Garden City extends to the kind of business that is conducted from its soil. The town has all the mundane shopping and entertainment offers that are now accepted parts of suburban life. However it is distinguished by some torch-bearing enterprises, whose glory matches Garden City's inherent appeal. The town for example is one of the 15 cities in which the noteworthy firm of Nixon Peabody LLP has a base. This firm has over 600 attorneys who work in 15 practice areas, but of most significance are its outstanding Community Outreach program, Pro Bono track record and commitment to the public interest.

Some towns are embellished by famous hotels and Garden City has this blessing as well. The hotel that is simply named after its host town is an island of grandeur in the world of elegant hospitality. Classic structure and convenient location give the weary traveler a welcome hint of the luxury that lies behind the imposing doors of the Garden City Hotel. More than 100 years old, the hotel is venerated across oceans and continents as one of the most sought after addresses for people who need to visit the area around New York. It is an excellent choice for meetings and social events, apart from the attractions of its gracious rooms and regal suites. The Polo Restaurant and Wine Room are statements in themselves. Connoisseurs of vintage dining could travel miles just for a meal experience in Garden City, and find the effort worthwhile.
