My Neighborhood - Long Island, New York
Glen Cove

The name Glen Cove can be deceptive. The downtown area of this place is so fluid with shoppers and the city's entertainment is so absorbing, that the hectic pace of Glen Cove's progress seems to bear no relation to the tranquility that one may associate with its label. It is not just in entertainment, but in every avenue of life; Glen Cove does everything with verve and even the most ordinary and serious of business is conducted with spectacular energy and enthusiasm.

Dining is a common introduction to a casual visitor anywhere and provides delectable diversion to permanent residents of any town. The Glen Cove excitement starts with its fantastic collection of restaurants. The entire town is like a giant food court with cuisine from every corner of the globe. International visitors are often amazed to find food right out of their kitchen in this part of Nassau! The skepticism of the most snobbish of gourmets melts in the face of imaginative menus and exclusive wine lists. Glen Cove's obsession with fine dining is never at the cost of children, fun and the expedient. A juicy steak, the freshest seafood and even a pizza in to which eager teeth can sink, are all available in droves. An army of imaginative people with sympathetic ears, deft hands, raw courage and large hearts work as bar tenders in Glen Cove. They are happily nocturnal in habit and are always the last in to bed!

The Maccarone Memorial Stadium now has lights and the happy scene of baseball night games. All field games in Glen Cove have received a boost with this feature and residents can look forward to facilities that match the best stadium anywhere. The Morgan Memorial Park and Danis Park are other open air grounds in Glen Cove that people use for recreation and for important events as well. Stanco Park and the Municipal Golf Course offer tennis and an 18-hole green for the public. The complex has a playground to keep children happy. Glen Cove also has a Bowling Alley, two Marinas and 2 Yacht Clubs.

The Glen Cove Rotary Club has enthusiastic members through whom is run a packed schedule of public service events. The town's chapter of this eminent international service organization focuses its attention closely on issues of greatest impact for lay people. It has instilled a sense of belonging in town folk and spread a sense of achievement through concrete programs.

The School District is as dynamic as the rest of this town. The Deasy and Gribbin Schools address the early learning needs of children up to Grade 2 and prepare them for a decade of intense and joyful learning. The Connolly and Landing Schools specialize in the next 2 years, taking good care until Grade 4. Cultural programs are added at this stage and children have their first encounters with computers. A separate program is available for children with special gifts. The town's Middle School goes up to Grade 8. Spread over several buildings and playing fields, this 20-acre estate is an inspiring institution that renders invaluable service in building the next generation. The Glen Cove High School is even more expansive, being set on 50 acres of prime real estate. It has one of the best computer science programs in the United States. The School combines the best academics with a culture of sports and an eclectic extra curricular set of offers. The Glen Cove Public Library carries forward the town's vast educational character and has built an enviable reputation for its historical collection and images of Long Island in the 19th century. The Garvies Point Museum is an important point in the quest to study archeology and the geological origins of the area. Glen Cove is also home to a Holocaust Memorial Center that offers detailed records, accounts and lectures on the event. The Museum and the Memorial are set amongst more than 250 acres of a nature preserve along the coast.
