LONG ISLAND NEW YORK

Over 100 miles tall, at times tantalizingly slim at just 12 miles across, home to some of the best brains in the country, with hills and deep forests and the Ocean always at her feet, Long Island is not just the largest in the US, but arguably the Queen of them all. Home to more than 7.5 million people and vacation resort to countless others every summer, Long Island has it all. Some associate it with the best of suburban life, while others know it for the distinguished firms that operate from here. People from all over the world watch top international sports events hosted on the Island, though conservationists would argue that the flight path to her bosom at least as well as that to their own spouses and companions. The Rail Road that lives to serve her exclusively has one of the best track records anywhere in the world, and the maze of tunnels and toll ways to her presence are often backed up all the way with ardent if tempestuous admirers. A primordial gift of nature, she never fails to excel at any endeavor. Long Island wines have stormed every gourmet bastion, and even the most faithful cannot resist the temptation of flirting with her engaging vino in their unprotected mouths.

Praise of Long Island's lithe dimensions and her incredibly sensuous appeal should never be at the cost of belittling her vital matriarchal aspect. The Island is a benevolent Madonna, providing holistic instruction to children from when they are still too young for kindergarten, to when Grade 12 prepares them for franchise as independent and free adults. Older people, deprived during their youth and those who have the fire to acquire new knowledge, can enjoy a lifetime of learning in Long Island's encouraging environment. Town libraries form a vast network and share their material resources to put an entire world of written resources at the free and easy disposal of the Island's researchers and readers. Each library has a comprehensive website of its own and some operate mobile services to take their facilities in to homes, especially of those with disabilities. Sea and land life forms threatened with extinction elsewhere are nurtured with love and care on Long Island in an inspiring assembly of the most varied genetic inventory. Artists and craftspeople of all genres are courted with liberal facilities and enthusiastic audiences. Clouds of Arctic birds choose Long Island for a stop-over during spring and autumn migration.

Grills and steaks cheerfully compete for the public palate with chefs from Japan and the most audacious of fusion cuisine. Girls play intra-mural soccer with as much aplomb as their male peers. Jazz and Beethoven have equal followers. Historic buildings are maintained with the same care with which plans are drafted for the future development of the Counties and their constituent towns. The lady has come a long way as she arose in the wake of the thaw of the last Ice Age. However she seems to have found the elixir of eternal youth, beauty and grace as she plays bounteous hostess to generation after generation of eclectic Americans.
